In 1967, the American athlete Kathrine Switzer, became the first woman
to run the Boston Marathon. At the time, athletics officials believed
women were incapable of running more than a mile and a half. The following is an excerpt from my memoir, Marathon Woman. It first appeared in Runner’s World Magazine, in April 2007.
While Marathon Woman tells the fuller story of my life before, during and after the momentous 1967 Boston Marathon, this excerpt deals mostly with that race itself. By the way, the drawings in this article are taken from the famous series of photos which are displayed on the home page slider; they are courtesy of the Boston Herald newspaper.
